May 30 Is Deadline for NeighborWoods Applications Keeping Greensboro Green, One Neighborhood at a Time
GREENSBORO – Greensboro neighborhoods are invited to apply for the 2007 NeighborWoods program. Begun in 2004, the program provides trees to Greensboro neighborhoods for planting to help replace those that have been damaged or lost through development, storms, or illness. NeighborWoods, a partnership between the City of Greensboro and Greensboro Beautiful Inc., selects one neighborhood each year and works with residents to choose tree species, train volunteers, and select a tree-planting day. Applications are available on the City’s website at www.greensboro-nc.gov. Click on Departments, then Planning, and then Urban Forestry and Programs. The application deadline is May 30.
Trees are an inexpensive way to help improve the environment. Trees clean the air and water, buffer noise, and increase property value. In Greensboro, for every four trees removed, only one is replaced. In the past 16 years, Greensboro has lost more than 18 percent of its tree cover. Greensboro’s Urban Forester Mike Cusimano says that is why the NeighborWoods program is so critical.
“Trees are a valuable asset to our community,” Cusimano said. “By working together, the City of Greensboro, Greensboro Beautiful, and neighborhoods can help our environment, and learn about tree care, while building stronger neighborhoods.”
The NeighborWoods program has proven successful in the Eastside Park, Glenwood, and Westerwood neighborhoods, where more than 450 trees have been planted.
Funding for the NeighborWoods program is provided by private donations made to the Greensboro Beautiful Tree Fund. If you are interested in providing funds to purchase trees and mulch for the program, call 373-2199. For more information, contact Mike Cusimano, Urban Forester, at 373-2150.
