Nathanael Greene Elementary Wins Tree Seedling Contest
GREENSBORO – Students at Nathanael Greene Elementary School will be honored on May 18 at 10:30 am as the winners of the Guilford County Schools Tree Seedling Planting contest. Sponsored by the Urban Forestry Committee of Greensboro Beautiful, the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service of Guilford County, and the City of Greensboro, third-graders in 63 Guilford County Schools were given dogwood seedlings in March as part of Arbor Day.
The Nathanael Greene third-graders planted 98 percent of their seedlings to win first place in the contest. They will receive a pizza party and have a new oak tree planted on the school property as part of their award.
Triangle Lake Elementary School won second place in the contest with 94 percent of their seedlings planted. Honorable mentions include individual classrooms that planted 100 percent of their seedlings: Mari Snipes and Mary Lentz’s third-graders at Oak Ridge Elementary, and Timothy Carroll and Barbara Crumpton’s third-graders at Nathanael Greene Elementary.
The seedlings were funded by a $5,000 grant from Syngenta Crop Protection. Volunteers from Greensboro Beautiful, Guilford County Master Gardeners, and American Express Company assisted in the preparation and distribution of seedlings. The ceremonial oak tree and pizza are being provided by Davey Tree & Lawn Care.
