City of Greensboro Receives $600,000 Grant from EPA Brownfields Program

GREENSBORO -- The South Elm Street area will be the recipient of three $200,000 brownfields cleanup grants that the City of Greensboro will receive from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Brownfields are properties that have hazardous substances that can complicate expansion or redevelopment.

The $600,000 in grants will be used to develop and clean up sections of the 14-acre South Elm Street Redevelopment Area. The area serves as a vital gateway to the City and its revitalization can lead to other improvements in south Greensboro, including job opportunities, improved pedestrian paths, and greater stability.

The sites to be cleaned were the former locations of gas stations, a printing company, and a manufactured gas plant, which are contaminated with hydrocarbons, metals, and perchloroethylene. Clean up work should begin this fall, and once finished, the South Elm Street area will be redeveloped for residential, retail, and office use. Grant funds will also be used to monitor groundwater and promote community involvement.

The EPA’s Brownfields Program encourages redevelopment of America’s estimated 450,000 abandoned and contaminated waste sites. It helps communities prevent, clean up, and reuse brownfields in an effort to change problem properties into productive community use.
