Aycock Historic Neighborhood Awarded Tree Planting Grant

GREENSBORO (August 7, 2007) – Aycock Historic Neighborhood was recently awarded the 2007 NeighborWoods Tree Planting Grant created by Greensboro Beautiful and the City of Greensboro.  As a result of the grant, the Aycock historic neighborhood will receive up to 150 trees to be planted throughout the neighborhood.

Residents in the Aycock neighborhood will work with a NeighborWoods project team to help choose the types of trees that will be planted, train tree-planting volunteers and select a tree-planting day. The NeighborWoods program will provide the trees and mulch, and residents will plant, water and mulch the trees.

The NeighborWoods Tree Planting Program was developed in 2003 as part of the City’s Comprehensive Planning process to help replace thousands of Greensboro trees that were destroyed as a result of ice, wind and development. Other Greensboro neighborhoods that have received tree planting grants in the past include Glenwood and Westerwood.

This year’s NeighborWoods Tree Planting Program is funded in part by a $7,500 grant from American Express. Other financial sponsors include the City’s Water Resources Department and private donations made to Greensboro Beautiful. To help further the work of the program, the City and Greensboro Beautiful are raising funds to help keep “Greensboro Great, Green and Growing.” Donations are tax deductible and will be used to purchase trees. To make donations to the NeighborWoods program, call Greensboro Beautiful at 373-2199 or visit www.greensborobeautiful.org.
