Police Department Vacancies Expected to Plummet in Early 2008

GREENSBORO, NC (October 31, 2007) – A recent staffing shortfall in the Greensboro Police Department is expected to be rectified in early 2008 when the graduates of the next police academy begin patrolling the streets of Greensboro with their fellow officers from the last two graduating classes.

“With only 30 current vacancies, the Police Department is making great progress in addressing the needs of our community,” said Chief Tim Bellamy. “We expect that number to drop dramatically – even to the point of completely eliminating any vacancies – when the next police academy graduates become sworn officers.”

The Police Department expects about 40 recruits in the 88th Police Basic Introductory Course (PBIC) set to begin in January. When combined with graduates from the recently-completed 86th and 87th police academy classes, the number of vacancies will plummet from a high of about 80 earlier this year. Nearly half of those vacancies were new positions authorized by the Greensboro City Council in June 2006.

The Division of Resource Management is still accepting applications for the 88th PBIC. For more information, call 1-888-GPD-JOBS (1-888-473-5627) or visit the City’s website at www.greensboro-nc.gov/jobs.
