Blasting Taking Place in Latham Park

GREENSBORO -- Park construction under contract with the City of Greensboro is progressing with the replacement of the sewer line through Latham Park to address overflows of sanitary sewage from the undersized line that has been in place since the 1930’s. The City is under mandate from the state to replace this line to address the problem.

The new line is not only larger but will be deeper than the current sewer. The geology of the alignment contains much rock and will require blasting to make way for the line. A detailed blasting plan was prepared by the contractor and approved by all necessary agencies. The plan was designed to minimize any risk of damage to neighboring structures. All blasts are monitored with seismic recording devices and if any damage to structures occurs then the contractor will be responsible for repairs if the contractor’s activities are found to be responsible.

The City recognizes that the blasts may be alarming to neighboring residents, but the need to conduct the work this way is unavoidable. All blasts are preceded by the sounding of a loud horn three times. The City is investigating the use of an autodialer for any resident who wishes to be called and alerted to an impending blast. The blasting is expected to continue between Elm and Wendover through August; during work days there may be several separate detonations.
