Greensboro Police Academy Graduates Will Help Fill Vacant Positions

GREENSBORO – (October 22, 2007) – The Greensboro Police Department (GPD) today announced the graduation of its 87th police recruiting class with 37 new officers who will be assigned to various field operation divisions. The new officers, who received more than 27 weeks of intense training, will patrol the City with a Police Training Officer for the next 14 weeks.

As the graduates of the 87th class begin their GPD careers, officers from the 86th graduating class have recently completed their field training. When combined, the two graduating classes will help reduce the vacancies in the GPD from 80 to about 30. The GPD expects to fill its next recruiting class in January of 2008 with 40 individuals. In doing so, the remaining vacancies will be filled, allowing the Police Department to strengthen its presence within the City, as well as assist in the department’s stated mission of “Policing for Greensboro’s Communities.”

“With the addition of these police officers, the GPD expects to increase its visibility in communities around Greensboro,” said GPD chief Tim Bellamy. “By working together with residents, the Police Department hopes to reduce crime and enhance safety measures in the City of Greensboro.”
