Greensboro Honored for ‘National Night Out’ Participation
GREENSBORO,NC – (November 6, 2007) – The National Association of Town Watch has selected Greensboro as a National Award Winner for the City’s participation in the 24th Annual National Night Out (NNO) on August 7.
Greensboro was one of three cities in the state selected as National Award Winners for cities with 100,000 to 299,000 residents and one of only 33 in the country.
National Night Out, initiated in 1984, is designed to heighten awareness of crime and drug prevention and to strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships. The Greensboro Police Department has served as the area’s organizer of NNO activities since the inception of the program in 1984. This year, more than 100 Greensboro neighborhoods and communities celebrated with front porch vigils, block parties, cookouts, parades, pool parties, neighborhood walks, and safety fairs. Eleven neighborhoods celebrated this year for the first time.
“Greensboro’s communities have traditionally been actively involved in National Night Out,” said Chief Tim Bellamy. “Through their participation, neighbors get to know each other better, and when neighbors know and care about each other, they feel more comfortable reporting crime and suspicious behavior to police. That translates into more people watching out for each other through the organized efforts of Community Watch groups, and that makes our community a safer place.”
The Community Resource Teams of the Greensboro Police Department work with neighborhood groups and community leaders throughout the year to promote the objectives of NNO. The 2007 Community Resource Officers include Sgt. P.M. Rogers, Sgt. P.E. Pell, Cpl. P.C. Uehlein, M.V. Francis, M. Daniel, S.P. Roberts, J.L. Carter, D.A. Smith, S.C. Ryan, F.R. Banks, and K.S. Miller.
