Parking Deck Mural Encourages Healthy Choices
Community Groups Work Together to Brighten Stairwell
UNCG college student Britt Peck is spending part of the summer making his mark on the community. With murals previously completed at the Bennett College Student Union and the Hayes-Taylor YMCA, Britt is now taking on a five-story stairwell in the Church Street parking deck adjacent to the Greensboro Public Library.
With a grant from UNCG, this mural is a collaborative project that involves the Greensboro Library Arts Commission (GLAC), African American Atelier, the City of Greensboro and the YWCA. One of the goals for the mural is to encourage parking deck users to take the stairs instead of the elevators.
Britt’s design features a story that includes multicultural characters, significant historical events from Greensboro and around the world plus an emphasis on the importance of staying fit. There is also a secret element to the design that won’t be apparent until the mural is complete.
How does one college student paint a 5-story mural in just a few short weeks? Well, Britt has a lot of help from a diverse group of young people. Participants are primarily students, some as young as 5, and all have a love of art. There is a group from the African American Atelier summer art camp and another group from the YWCA summer program.
