City to Implement Pay-by-Space Parking Beginning January 2
GREENSBORO, NC – (December 26, 2007) – The City of Greensboro Department of Transportation will begin using pay-by-space parking on Wednesday, January 2 in the Elm/Greene and Elm/McGee parking lots downtown. The familiar parking meters currently in use will be replaced by three automated pay stations offering such conveniences as credit card payments and printed receipts. To ensure a smooth transition to the new parking procedure, staff will be available on January 2 to provide assistance to parking customers.
Using the new pay-by-space system is simple. Upon parking, visitors will make note of the numbered space they will occupy. At the pay station, customers press “OK” on the machine to begin, and follow the on-screen prompts. After entering the space number, expected length of stay and payment method, a receipt of the transaction will be issued. There is no need to return to the vehicle since the validation is maintained inside of the pay station and the receipt is for the customer’s records only. In addition to bright displays featuring step-by-step directions, the LCD screens also offer assistance in English and Spanish languages.
The most significant benefits for parkers, however, are the new payment options. In addition to coins, the pay stations accept $1 bills and major credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover).
The new pay-by-space system also allows more effective parking enforcement. The computer interface lets parking officers view active and expired spaces from the office, as well as on site, which helps rotate parkers in and out effectively. The new pay stations will also reduce the cost of collecting revenue and meter maintenance.
