Greensboro Recycling Program Now Takes Rigid Plastics
GREENSBORO, NC (September 14, 2007) – In 2006, Greensboro residents recycled more than 30,000 tons of materials. That number should increase in 2007 now that the City's recycling program accepts a new type of recyclable item.
Rigid plastic such as buckets, children’s toys, and lawn furniture are all now accepted and can be placed directly in residents’ brown recycling containers. These rigid plastic items take up a substantial amount of space in landfills so recycling them is a positive step toward protecting the environment. Rigid plastics that can be recycled include: • Milk and soda crates • Laundry baskets • Lawn furniture • Plastic toys • Plastic totes • Pet carriers and litter boxes • Cleaned empty garbage cans (any size) • Rinsed plastic drums (any size) • Plastic pallets, nursery trays and flower pots • Plastic five-gallon water bottles • Plastic outdoor toys (sandboxes, slides, play kitchens)
Simply place any of the acceptable items in your brown recycling container, along with your other recyclables. Items that are too large to fit into your recycling container should be taken to any of nine drop-off locations in Greensboro: • Fire Station #7 -1064 Gatewood Avenue • Fire Station #14 - 3633 Summit Avenue • Fire Station #19 - 6900 Downwind Road • Jaycee Park - 3110 Forest Lawn Drive • Windsor Community Center - 1601 East Lee Street • Grimsley High School - 801 Westover Terrace • Smith High School - 2407 South Holden Road • Lindley Elementary School - 2700 Camden Road • Guilford County Cooperative Extension Service - 3309 Burlington Road Greensboro has an innovative, user-friendly recycling program, with no sorting required. All recyclable items can simply be placed in your brown recycling container and rolled to the curb each week.
