Every Other Week Recycling Collection Begins January 28

GREENSBORO, NC -- (January 7, 2008) -- The City of Greensboro will begin servicing residential recycling containers every other week, beginning January 28. This change from weekly collection will allow the City’s recycling collection program to operate more efficiently by more closely meeting the collection needs of residents.

Greensboro residents can learn which weeks their recyclables will be picked up in the following ways:

  • Mail: All residents with a brown recycling container will receive a postcard in the mail that shows the weeks of their recycling collection for 2008.
  • Website: Visit www.greensboro-nc.gov, go to the Every Other Week link and type in your address. A map and calendar will let you know which weeks your recyclables will be picked up.
  • Phone: Call 373-CITY (2489) and give your address to the Customer Service Representative who answers your call to learn which weeks your collection will take place.
  • Media: Channel 13, local newspapers, television and radio stations, as well as billboards will have information on the new schedule.

The day of the week for recycling collection will not change.

If you typically fill up your brown recycling container every week, you may call 373-CITY (2489) to purchase a second recycling container. The cost is $30 per container during January and February and City staff will deliver it to your home. You may also take your recyclables to one of nine conveniently located recycling drop sites:

  • Fire Station #7 -1064 Gatewood Avenue
  • Fire Station #14 - 3633 Summit Avenue
  • Fire Station #19 - 6900 Downwind Road
  • Jaycee Park - 3110 Forest Lawn Drive
  • Windsor Community Center - 1601 East Lee Street
  • Grimsley High School - 801 Westover Terrace
  • Smith High School - 2407 South Holden Road
  • Lindley Elementary School - 2700 Camden Road
  • Guilford County Cooperative Extension Services - 3309 Burlington Road.

Recycling is one of the best ways for you to protect the environment. Recycling saves
natural resources, keeps reusable items out of our landfills, and provides the materials needed to make new products. The City has a user-friendly recycling program, with no sorting required. All recyclable items can simply be placed in the brown recycling container and rolled to the curb every other week. Recyclable items include:

  • Newspapers, magazines, office paper and junk mail
  • Plastic bottles #1 and #2
  • Empty aerosol cans
  • Glass food and drink bottles and jars
  • Cardboard and chipboard (flat gray cardboard)
  • Aluminum, steel, and tin cans
  • Hard plastic (plastic buckets, laundry baskets, milk crates, etc.).

Trash collection will not be affected by the new recycling collection schedule - your green trash container will still be picked up once a week on your regular collection day.
