City Asks for Residents' Help with Disappearing Manhole Covers

GREENSBORO, NC (March 5, 2008) – Manhole covers and storm water grates are disappearing from city streets, and the City of Greensboro is requesting help from residents to stop these thefts.

Within the past few weeks, more than 70 cast iron manhole covers and storm water grates have been stolen. City officials believe the items are being sold to scrap metal companies for cash and are working with local scrap metal companies to identify potential thieves. Each cover and grate costs $60 to replace.

If you see vandalism of manhole covers or storm water grates in progress, please contact the Greensboro Police Department at 911. If you see missing manhole covers or grates, call the City’s Contact Center at 373-CITY (2489).
