Odor and Taste Concerns Caused by Recent Rains

GREENSBORO, NC – (April 11, 2008) – Water customers in northern and central service areas of Greensboro’s water system may have noticed recently that their tap water has a slightly different taste and odor. The odor is often described as earthy or musty and is most noticeable from hot water.

This is a temporary condition and poses no health threat to water users as the problem is aesthetic only. Recent heavy rains that have replenished water reservoirs have also disturbed an unusually large amount of sediment deposited on the bottom of lakes. These accumulations are attributed to the recent prolonged drought. It will take several days for lakes to resettle and return to normal conditions.

The City of Greensboro’s two water treatment plants have made several adjustments in treatment technique to improve the aesthetic quality of tap water during this event. Greensboro’s Water Supply Manager, Steven Drew says, "Water customers should know that their water supply is safe and continues to meet and exceed the high water quality standards they are accustomed to.”
