City Plans News Conference to Provide Storm Update

GREENSBORO, NC – (May 9, 2008) – The Greensboro Police Department and City officials will conduct a news conference this morning at 11 am to provide information about areas near the Piedmont Triad Farmer’s Market off I-40 that were damaged by last night’s severe storms. 

A number of areas are closed due to damage and downed power lines, police said. A Crime Scene Investigator and members of the Greensboro Fire Department are conducting assessments this morning of the closed areas to determine whether they are safe for individuals. Several businesses are located in the affected areas. Police have cordoned off the areas of concern.

Once areas are determined to be safe, business owners will be notified by phone from the GPD’s Geo-Notify system.

“Our goal is to get as many areas open as possible while still protecting public safety,” said City Manager Mitchell Johnson.

The areas around Triad Drive, Little Santee Road, Capital Drive and Standard Drive appear to have been hardest hit by the storm.

The Police Department is operating from its Mobile Command Center at the Farmer’s Market. The news conference will be held at the Mobile Command Center.
