Greensboro Transit Authority Demonstrates Hybrid Bus Technology on Transit Routes
GREENSBORO, NC – July 2, 2008 – Greensboro Transit Authority’s current fleet of public transit buses has been joined temporarily by a new diesel-electric hybrid bus. The new 40-foot Gillig hybrid vehicle is being rotated among GTA bus routes courtesy of Allison Transmissions, manufacturers of hybrid bus technologies.
The vehicle, which will hold 35 to 40 seated passengers, will be used in transit operations by GTA until Tuesday, July 8. The bus will also be featured in the annual Fun Fourth parade on Friday, July 4 beginning at 9:30 am in downtown Greensboro.
GTA is using the opportunity to evaluate operations of the bus in real world conditions ahead of the arrival of the first permanent hybrid bus in another 12-18 months. Hybrid buses operate similarly to hybrid autos, using battery-stored electricity to provide operating power to the bus. The diesel engine is used to charge the batteries and provide additional acceleration when needed, increasing fuel mileage and reducing emissions.
The Greensboro Department of Transportation (GDOT) seeks to increase public safety and mobility through the effective planning and delivery of transportation services and operation of municipal transit.
