Youth Citizen’s Fire Academy Accepts Applications
GREENSBORO – (January 4, 2008) -- The Greensboro Youth Council (GYC), a Greensboro Parks and Recreation Department program, and the Greensboro Fire Department are partnering to present the fifth annual Youth Citizen’s Fire Academy (YCFA). The program is designed to give teens insight into the challenges facing today’s firefighters and learn about fire department operations.
Modeled after the Youth Citizen’s Police Academy, YCFA students will attend eight sessions learning the basics of firefighting including medical and EMS response; ladder, knot and rope training; rappelling; simulated live burns, search and rescue techniques and special teams demonstrations. Students will tour fire stations and the communication center as well as do a ride along with the Greensboro Fire Department. The program will also include insight into special recruit training.
Students must submit an application through the GYC. Program applicants must be sophomores, juniors or seniors enrolled in any of the public, private or home schools in Guilford County. Applications are due January 18. Sessions are bi-monthly and start on Wednesday, February 6. Only 12 applicants can be accepted for the upcoming session.
For more information on this program or to request an application, contact Jenny Caviness, GYC Coordinator, at (336) 373-2733. Applications are also available online at www.greensboro-nc.gov/leisure/gyc.
