Kick Off Your Holiday Season with Festival of Lights

GREENSBORO, NC – (November 14, 2008) – This year’s Festival of Lights will be held on Friday, December 5 from 5:45 pm to 9 pm.

The 20th annual downtown festival kicks off the holiday season with a musical stroll along Elm Street, showcasing over 20 different performance groups, from Center City Park south to Bain Street, across the tracks. Shops and galleries will be decorated in their holiday best and restaurants will be open for festival goers to enjoy a favorite meal or sample something new.

Festival of Lights will also feature a “Winter Wonderland” in Hamburger Square Park, located at the intersection of South Elm and McGee. Santa will be available to chat with children (and adults!) – be sure to bring your camera for that holiday photo. Holiday stories will be read by the staff of Greensboro Public Library, and there will be roasted marshmallows for all!

New this year, the Joseph M. Bryan Foundation has donated a 38-foot Christmas tree, topped by a 5-foot star. This addition to Center City Park will be enjoyed for years to come.

Other highlights of the festival will include music from North Carolina A & T Fellowship Gospel Choir at 5:45 pm, a community sing-along led by Wally West at 7 pm, and the lighting of the community tree at 7:30 pm. Center City Park will be the site of activities for families, kids crafts, a moon bounce and more.

Festival of Lights has partnered with United Arts Council and Downtown Greensboro Inc. for this event. Many art galleries, antique stores and retail shops will be open late. These two partner organizations will host a cider tent at the corner of South Elm and Lewis streets and are planning a horse and carriage ride that will tour through the arts district in Old Greensborough.
