Greensboro Beautiful Annual Awards Presented

Greensboro, NC -- (August 26, 2008) -- Greensboro Beautiful held its annual meeting and awards reception on Thursday, August 21 at the Greensboro Council of Garden Clubs. The event was also a celebration of Greensboro Beautiful’s 40th birthday.

Each year Greensboro Beautiful recognizes individuals, organizations, community efforts, businesses, garden clubs, and schools for outstanding projects and programs that exemplify the organization's mission. This year's awards were presented to:

  • Special Recognition Award - Jim Wolfe (Wolfe Homes) for first-class construction of the new Tanger Family Wedding Gazebo at the Greensboro Arboretum; Nancy Seay, ASLA, for beautifully rendered maps of the Tanger Family Bicentennial Garden, Bog Garden and Greensboro Arboretum, which were used to develop the Gardens of Greensboro brochure, individual garden guides and signage for each of the public gardens; and John S. Clark Company LLC, for donating 50 trees and shrubs to Country Park in honor of the company’s 50th anniversary.
  • Clean Campus Award - General Greene Elementary School; honorable mentions to Weaver Academy and Lindley Elementary School.
  • Volunteer Service Award - Graham Pritchard for his continued dedication to the annual Arbor Day Seedling distribution, Mobile Meals wreath delivery, newsletter mailings, and Caldwell Archaeology Project; Cindy Findley for her ongoing dedication to serving as a Business Landscape Award and East Market Street Development Corporation Property of the Month judge; and Sallye Chambers for her ongoing dedication to serving as a Business Landscape Award and East Market Street Development Corporation Property of the Month judge.
  • Youth Service Award - Will Copeland, Eagle Scout (Troop #230 - Old North State Council) for working to rebuild stone stairs in Fisher Park to provide a more beautiful access to this historic neighborhood park; and Jahleel and Kolonji Murray for their ongoing commitment to cleanup efforts on Eckerson Road, demonstrating their concern for their community's appearance and environment.
  • School Award - Newcomers School for developing and maintaining a vegetable garden at the school, and integrating this experience into teaching children about sustainability.
  • Outstanding Garden Project Award - Sedgefield Garden Club for developing and continuing a garden therapy program for residents of Maryfield.
  • Neighborhood Service Award - Greater Glenwood Neighborhood Association for their continued work enhancing the Glenwood Neighborhood including a community garden, tree plantings, rain barrels, a sculpture garden, and collaborating with numerous city and nonprofit groups to engage the community in their neighborhood revitalization; and Westridge Neighborhood Association for developing the City's first Neighborhood Conservation Overlay, including a standard for tree preservation.
  • Outstanding Single Project Award - Greensboro Housing Authority for restoration of the Hampton Homes community and enhanced landscaping and streetscape along South Elm/Eugene Street.
  • Outstanding Board Member Award - Steve Windham for his outstanding leadership of the Public Gardens Committee, donation of landscape design services, and assistance with landscape renovations in the Winter Garden at the Greensboro Arboretum; and Tom Leatherberry for his tireless efforts and continued dedication to supporting Greensboro Beautiful's many projects and programs, and for his instrumental work in involving Duke Energy in beautification and environmental initiatives in our community.
  • Anne Boyd Ecology Award - Northern Guilford Middle School (Guilford County School System) for construction of an outstanding example of an environmentally sustainable “green” school.
  • Robert L. Garrard Award of Distinction - Dennis & Nancy Quaintance for the design and development of Proximity Hotel – a first-class example of innovative environmental and sustainable building practices.
  • Lifetime Achievement Award - Joe Quinn with gratitude for his continued outstanding support of Greensboro Beautiful's mission and work in the community for the past 20 years.
