Rains Cause Roadway Flooding, Police Urge Caution

GREENSBORO, NC – (August 27, 2008) – Heavy rains have caused roadway flooding and traffic light outages this morning in Greensboro. A flash flood warning is in effect for Guilford County until 9:30 am today.

Flooded areas include East Cone Boulevard at Sands Drive, Wendover Avenue and Bridford Parkway, and Alamance Church Road at Sharpe Road.

Greensboro Police Lt. Dennis Willoughby said water in some areas has receded as the rains have lightened over the past hour.

Traffic lights are out of service at the intersection of Spring Garden Street and Holden Road and at the intersection of Wendover and Holden.

Police are handling numerous weather-related traffic accidents throughout the city, and are on the scene this morning at Bryan Boulevard and Holden Road, where a car is stranded in water.

Drivers should never attempt to drive through flooded areas in roadways, police said, since the water can be much deeper than it appears.
