2008 NeighborWoods Community Tree Planting Project a Success

Greensboro, NC -- (November 12, 2008) -- Saturday, November 8 dawned clear and warm as more than 100 volunteers gathered in the Charles B. Aycock Historic Neighborhood and Aycock Middle School for Greensboro’s 4th annual NeighborWoods Community Tree Planting project.

Sponsored by Greensboro Beautiful Inc. in partnership with the City of Greensboro, this program is designed to help restore the tree cover in Greensboro by planting trees in neighborhoods. Greensboro Beautiful’s Urban Forestry Committee has developed a plan to involve community volunteers in planting up to 150 trees on neighborhood streets and in community parks each year.

This year’s tree planting was funded by a $7,500 grant from American Express, along with a $5,000 grant from REI. Program planning and implementation included representatives from Greensboro Beautiful’s Urban Forestry Committee, the City's Planning, Parks & Recreation, Field Operations and Water Resources departments, the Aycock Neighborhood Association, and the NC Cooperative Extension Service in Guilford County. Additional in-kind support was provided by Dunlap Lawn Service Inc.

A very special thanks goes to these community volunteer groups who helped plant more than 100 trees in only two hours:

American Express
UNCG’s Interior Architecture Department
Charles B. Aycock Neighborhood Association
Cub Scout Pack #244
Greensboro Beautiful Inc.
Guilford County Master Gardeners
Unitarian Universalist Church of Greensboro.

Applications for the 2009 NeighborWoods Tree Planting Project will be available to community groups after December 1, 2008. For more information, contact Mike Cusimano, Urban Forester, Greensboro Planning Department, at 373-2150.
