NeighborWoods Event Planned in Aycock Historic Neighborhood
GREENSBORO, NC -- (October 13, 2008) – As many as 150 trees will be planted throughout the Aycock Historic Neighborhood on Saturday, November 8 as part of the 2007-2008 NeighborWoods Community Tree Planting Grant created by Greensboro Beautiful Inc. and the City of Greensboro. The tree planting had been scheduled for last fall, but was postponed due to drought conditions. Residents in the Aycock neighborhood have worked with a NeighborWoods project team to help choose the types of trees that will be planted and volunteers have been trained in proper tree-planting techniques. The NeighborWoods program will provide the trees and mulch and residents and other volunteers will do the rest.
The NeighborWoods Tree Planting Program was developed as part of the City’s Comprehensive Planning process to help replace thousands of Greensboro trees that have been destroyed as a result of ice, wind, and development. Other Greensboro neighborhoods that have received tree planting grants in the past include East Side Park, Glenwood, and Westerwood.
This year’s NeighborWoods Tree Planting Program is funded in part by grants provided by American Express and REI. Other financial sponsors include the City’s Water Resources Department, Dunlap Lawn Service, and private donations made to Greensboro Beautiful’s Tree Fund.
To help further the work of the program, the City and Greensboro Beautiful are raising funds to help keep “Greensboro Great, Green and Growing.” Donations to the Tree Fund are tax-deductible, and will be used to purchase trees, mulch, and educational materials. To make donations to support the NeighborWoods program, call Greensboro Beautiful at 373-2199 or visit www.greensborobeautiful.org. To volunteer to help with tree planting in Aycock, call Mary Sertell with the City’s Planning Department at 373-4769.
