Shoppers with Disabilities Head to the Stores with Volunteers

GREENSBORO, NC -- (December 2, 2008) – The Greensboro Mayor’s Committee for Persons with Disabilities will hold its 23rd annual Special Shopper’s Day on Thursday, December 4, from 9 am to noon at Four Seasons Town Centre.

More than 200 shoppers with different abilities will be accompanied by volunteers from area high schools and organizations throughout Guilford County, as well as local residents. Shopper’s Day allows volunteers to gain valuable insight from persons with disabilities, while teaching the importance of empathy, acceptance and compassion. Volunteers also become aware of barriers that people with disabilities face on a daily basis. This allows the volunteers to come away with a heightened sense of awareness of our diverse populations’ every day obstructions.

The event also features entertainment by people with disabilities throughout the morning. The MC for the 2008 event will be local DJ, Busta Brown.

“These shoppers are some of our most talented residents and we want to support all of the good things they do for our community,” said Greensboro Mayor Yvonne Johnson.  Shopper’s day is just one way to support our special needs residents. The event provides personal learning to all who are shopping and volunteering, and also exhibits Greensboro’s commitment of inclusion of all people. What a wonderful way to start the holiday season.”
