City Now Taking Applications for City Academy Participants get inside view of local government at work
GREENSBORO, NC --(June 2, 2009) – The City of Greensboro is accepting applications for its public education program, Government Works: A City Academy, now through July 17. The program, which was recognized by the U.S. Conference of Mayors as one of the country’s premier government educational programs, teaches participants about City government through experiential learning and in-depth exercises. It also helps develop future leaders and build a better community through well-informed, civically engaged residents.
Classes are held weekly from 5:45-9 pm from September 3 through November 12. During the course of the program, participants will get a chance to undergo a simulated “balanced budget” exercise, tour the Guilford Metro 9-1-1 Center, visit the firing range, and take part in many more activities at different City-owned facilities. Also, participants can choose to attend an extra evening and Saturday session that focuses on the Greensboro Police Department with hand-on exercises at the Police Western Division station and Public Safety Training Facility.
“This program is designed to provide class participants with an inside view of City government,” says Interim City Manager Bob Morgan. “This experience creates an atmosphere where residents and government staff work together to increase the quality of life that we all enjoy in Greensboro.”
City Academy is free and open to any resident who lives within the corporate limits of City of Greensboro. Twenty-five people representing all council districts and various backgrounds will be selected for the academy. Other selection criteria include:
- 18 years of age or older
- Must attend 80 percent of classes
- Written statement of desire to participate
- Preference given to those willing to serve on a board or commission
The program will conclude with a graduation ceremony on Tuesday, November 17, during a regularly scheduled Greensboro City Council meeting.
