City Participates in Bike-to-Work Week and Bike-to-Work Day
GREENSBORO, NC -- (May 8, 2009) – Greensboro’s Mayor Yvonne Johnson has declared May 11-15 as Bike-to-Work Week in celebration of May being National Bike Month and May 15 is touted as Bike-to-Work Day. To support these days, residents are asked to dust off their two-wheelers and go for a ride.
To kick off the week, the City hosts the Law Enforcement Bicycle Ride, which features officers from Mecklenburg County who are riding 410 miles in four days from Charlotte to Washington, D.C. in honor of officers who have died in the line of duty. The riders will stop at the Guilford County Law Enforcement Memorial on Governmental Plaza, 300 W. Washington St., at 9:30 am on Monday, May 11. Here, they will hold a remembrance for Greensboro’s fallen heroes before getting back on the road again.
Bike-riding residents are invited to join the Law Enforcement Bicycle Ride anywhere along its route through Guilford County. For more information on the ride, visit www.biketodc.com.
Many other activities have been planned to celebrate bicycling during Bike to Work Week. For a complete listing, visit www.pedpower.org/bikemonth.htm.
On Friday, May 15, Bike-to-Work Day, the Greensboro Transit Authority will offer half price fares from 5 am to 12 midnight for passengers who board with their bicycles. And a refueling station for biking commuters will be held at the Government Plaza, 300 W. Washington St. Riders can stop at the plaza from 7-9 am for free refreshments. The station is sponsored by Greensboro’s Department of Transportation and Metropolitan Planning Organization.
