Battleground Rail Trail Construction Underway
GREENSBORO, NC -- (June 23, 2009) – Construction has begun on the Battleground Rail Trail (BRT). The BRT, a high quality off-road pedestrian and bicycle facility, will stretch one mile between Pisgah Church Road and Markland Drive serving as an important part of the growing regional trail system. The BRT will connect its users to the Lake Brandt, Bicentennial, and the planned Piedmont greenways, as well as to nearby destinations such as Jaycee Park, Guilford Courthouse National Military Park, Bur-Mil Park, Summerfield, and the watershed trails at Lake Brandt and Lake Higgins. A southern portion of the rail trail will eventually connect to other trails such as the proposed Pine Cone Greenway, Green Valley Connector, Lake Daniel Greenway and the future Downtown Greenway.
The BRT project was originally approved by Greensboro voters through the 2000 Bond Referendum, and has since received significant federal funding. Public meetings have been held to advance the development of the BRT and as the result additional federal funding was secured to construct an underpass at Cone Boulevard. The underpass will enhance the safety and convenience of the BRT for both trail users and motorists. Sidewalk construction on Cone Boulevard from Lawndale Drive to Battleground Avenue, and improvements to the Battleground Avenue / Benjamin Parkway / Cone Boulevard intersection are being planned to coordinate with construction of the BRT, as are other nearby sidewalks along Lawndale Drive, Battleground Avenue, Pinedale Road, Benjamin Parkway, Pisgah Church Road and Cornwallis Drive.
