City Receives Award for Innovative Use of GIS Technology
GREENSBORO, NC -- (July 21, 2009) – The City of Greensboro was recently honored with the Special Achievement in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Award from the Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI), the world leader in GIS modeling and mapping technology. The award was presented at ESRI’s 2009 International User Conference held July 13-17 in San Diego, Calif.
The City was one of 150 organizations, out of 300,000 organizations worldwide, selected to receive the award for its vision, leadership and innovative use of GIS technology. GIS combines computer hardware, software and data to collect, manage and analyze geographic information.
The City received the award for its integration of GIS with the City’s Contact Center and Asset/Work Management technologies. Tying these three technologies together enables residents to call a single telephone number (373-CITY) to request a City service. It also allows City staff to improve responsiveness and track the progress of residents’ requests, while reducing the cost of service.
The technology is used in most City departments including Transportation, Field Operations, Water Resources, Planning, Facilities Management and Parks & Recreation. The City also uses GIS to analyze crime treads, economic development and much more.
