Guilford JobLink Career Centers Achieve State’s Highest Chartering Status

GREENSBORO, NC – (October 16, 2009) -- The Guilford JobLink Career Centers (one in Greensboro and one in High Point) recently completed the Malcolm Baldrige Quality Awards Criteria, standards that use a private-sector model for doing customer-focused business, and received Level III chartering status, the highest level of chartering awarded by the state Division of Workforce Development. Chartering standards establish statewide policies of operation that also allow for local flexibility in service delivery. These achievements were announced at the Workforce Development Partnership Conference held October 7-9 in Greensboro. 

Guilford JobLink is a function of the City of Greensboro’s Training and Employment Services Division - Executive Department and is administered by the Greensboro-High Point-Guilford County Workforce Development Board. Guilford JobLink offers employment services to businesses and job seekers.

Also at the conference, NC Commerce Secretary Keith announced that two participates from the Guilford JobLink Career Center in Greensboro, Kathleen Grant and Tayler Lewellyn, were chosen as recipients of the 2009 Governor’s Award for Excellence in Workforce Development. Grant won in the adult participant category and Lewellyn won in the youth participant category. The award honors individuals for outstanding accomplishments in pursuing their training and career objectives. 

Guilford JobLink assisted Grant by helping her turn a layoff into a life-changing and career-enhancing opportunity. Following a skills assessment, educational recommendations and career guidance from staff at the Guilford JobLink Career Center, Grant completed a nursing program and passed a licensure exam. She started work as a licensed practical nurse (LPN) - charge nurse in January.

Guilford JobLink was also there for Lewellyn when she faced an uncertain future after life responsibilities interrupted her education. She enrolled in services through the Workforce Investment Act Youth Program at Guilford JobLink and went on to earned her high school diploma, completed a college program and is now employed as a nurse’s assistant. She is also training to become a registered nurse.
