Annual Memorial Breakfast Scheduled to Honor the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
GREENSBORO, NC -- (January 2, 2009) -- The Greensboro Human Relations Commission will sponsor its Annual Memorial Breakfast for the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at the Sheraton Hotel at Four Seasons/Koury Convention Center on Monday, January 19, 2009 at 7:30 am. Tickets for the event are $20 each. Tickets will not be sold at the door.
The keynote speaker will be Gwendolyn Boyd, Executive Assistant to the Chief of Staff, Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory. An Alabama State University summa cum laude graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics and a double minor in physics and music, Boyd was awarded a graduate fellowship to Yale University. She was the first African-American female to earn a Master of Science degree in mechanical engineering from the Ivy League institution. Boyd joined the Johns Hopkins University (JHU) Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) as a team engineer, and in 2004 she became Executive Assistant to the APL Chief of Staff. In 2005, she was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from both Lincoln University in Pennsylvania and Bennett College for Women in Greensboro.
Boyd served as the 22nd National President of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., an international service sorority with more than 200,000 worldwide members, from 2000 to 2004. An ordained minister, she serves as the Executive Minister for Church Operations at Ebenezer A.M.E. Church in Fort Washington, MD. She recently earned her Master of Divinity degree with Honors from Howard University School of Divinity.
