Greensboro’s 2009 National Bicycle and Pedestrian Documentation Project is Complete
GREENSBORO, NC -- (September 30, 2009) -- Greensboro’s National Bicycle and Pedestrian Documentation Project (NBPD) is complete and has been submitted to the Institute of Transportation Engineers for inclusion in a national database on bicycle and pedestrian traffic on public roadways.
The project, a collaborative effort by the City’s Department of Transportation and the University of North Carolina Greensboro’s Department of Public Health, involved 67 volunteers who from September 8-13 counted bicycle and pedestrian traffic at four sites in the city. They counted more than 700 cyclists during that period and more than 8,000 pedestrians.
The purpose of the NBPD project is to understand how changes in a community’s infrastructure or other factors affect levels of bicycling and walking, and identify and prioritize locations where new or improved bicycle and pedestrian facilities are needed. The project also helps identify how often unsafe interactions take place between bicyclists, pedestrians, and motorists.
Data from the project will be used at the federal and local levels to lobby for better cycling and pedestrian laws, additional bicycle lanes and sidewalks, and more awareness of cycling and pedestrian needs.
Greensboro is one of more than 60 communities nationally that participate in the NBPD project. For more information, call Peggy Holland, the City’s bicycle and pedestrian coordinator, at 373-2921.
