City Recognized as a Bike-Friendly Community

GREENSBORO, NC – (October 20, 2009) – The City of Greensboro has been recognized by the League of American Bicyclists as a Bronze level Bicycle Friendly Community. Greensboro is the fourth city in the state to be awarded this distinction.

The City was recognized for outstanding work in the following areas of bicycle safety: engineering, education, encouragement, enforcement, evaluation, and planning. Being designated a bicycle friendly community will help cement the City’s progress and build momentum, recognition, and support for continuing advancements in making bicycling a viable form of transportation in Greensboro.

Greensboro has a long history of cycling and has been making genuine progress within the last few years to make the community better for bicycling. Some of the highlights have included the adoption of the Comprehensive Bicycle, Pedestrian and Greenway Master Plan (BiPed) in December 2006; the incorporation of bicycling facilities into the roadway design guidelines; more than 15 miles of new bike lanes/edgelines; 38 miles of signed bike routes; a road alteration that converted a four-lane roadway into a three-lane roadway with bicycle lanes on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive; and wide outside lanes and shared-use paths. The City also created a Web site, www.gsosharestheroad.org, dedicated to bicycle safety.
