Guilford Metro 9-1-1’s Whittington Elected President of National Organization
GREENSBORO, NC -- (July 24, 2009) – Craig Whittington, 9-1-1 and special projects coordinator for the City of Greensboro/Guilford County’s Guilford Metro 9-1-1 Emergency Communications Center, has dedicated his entire career to serving and protecting the public. A 30-year veteran of emergency services, he has served in nearly every area of public safety, including 21 years as a firefighter, 15 years as a paramedic, 10 years as a sworn police officer, and 15 years as a 9-1-1 telecommunicator. Because of his commitment to the emergency services profession, he was recently elected president of the National Emergency Number Association (NENA), a national organization focused on 9-1-1 policy, technology, operations and education issues.
A 2008 inductee into the North Carolina NENA’s “9-1-1 Hall of Fame,” Whittington has been a NENA member since 1991, participating in numerous chapter and national initiatives. He served twice on the North Carolina NENA chapter Board of Directors and was a founding member of the state’s Telecommunicator Emergency Response Taskforce (TERT) program. Nationally, he served on NENA’s Education Advisory Board before being elected to the Executive Board in 2007. He is also a certified Emergency Number Professional and one of only 12 NENA instructors in the country.
“To have a member of Guilford Metro 9-1-1 become the national president of the premier 9-1-1 association in the world, is quite an honor,” said Wesley Reid, director of Guilford Metro 9-1-1. “Through Craig’s involvement with the NENA, our center stays abreast on all of the national and international trends, legislative activities, standards/best practices and issues facing the 9-1-1 and public safety communications community."
