HEAT Offers Two New Routes

GREENSBORO, NC – (August 18, 2010) – As the City's Higher Education Area Transit (HEAT) service starts its fifth year, two additional routes have been added to the previous seven to offer area college students and the public more access to local shopping and entertainment options.

Route 76 Express HEAT – East directly connects the campuses of NC A&T State University and Bennett College with Four Seasons Town Centre and the Shoppes at Pyramids Village. Route 78 Express HEAT – West provides direct service from the campuses of Guilford College and the University of North Carolina-Greensboro to Four Seasons Town Centre and the Wendover Avenue shopping area.

“The express routes to Four Seasons have been a consistent request from the HEAT community,” says Kevin Elwood, strategic information specialist for Greensboro Transit Authority (GTA). “By adding these additional locations for students and the public to shop, dine, take in a movie and more, people will be more inclined to take public transportation for these and other needs, removing vehicles off the roads, and enjoying the various benefits of leaving the car parked on campus or at home. Now that the additional routes are in place, we want our riders to use them and use them often.”

The City's HEAT service is a nationally recognized transit partnership between GTA and six local institutions of higher learning, which offers mobility options to students.

Details of the new routes are available at www.rideheat.com, where downloadable schedules, maps, and other rider information are available. The site also connects visitors with HEAT's and GTA’s social media presence on YouTube, Twitter and Facebook.

In support of the new season of service, HEAT is also sponsoring the Hot Shot Video Contest, seeking submissions of digital videos chronicling riders’ experiences or thoughts on HEAT, GTA or public transportation in general. The owner of the most creative video will receive a new Apple iPad. Rules and submission requirements are available at www.rideheat.com.
