City Manager Gives Council Preview of FY 2010-11 Budget

GREENSBORO, NC (April 6, 2010) – At a Greensboro City Council work session happening this afternoon, Tuesday, April 6, City Manager Rashad Young will give Council a preview of the City’s FY 2010-11 budget.
 
In his presentation, Young will highlight the following:

  • No property tax increase for residents
  • Plans to move forward with $40 million in bond projects
  • Closing the $11.3 million budget gap
  • Service changes
    • Possible changes in service affecting several departments including Parks & Recreation, Field Operations, Library, Fire and Transportation.
  • Impact to employees
    • 2 percent merit increases for employees. This will represent a $650,000 cost avoidance for the City.
    • Cap on longevity pay and new employees will not be eligible for the benefit.

The overall goal of the FY 2010-11 budget is to reorganize the structure of the City’s government, while meeting City Council’s priorities and service expectations of residents.

Over the next few months, City staff will work with Council to develop a proposed budget. The tentative budget process schedule is as follows:

  • April 27: City Council Work Session on budget, including discussion related to closure of the White Street Landfill, water rates and fund balance
  • May 18: Presentation of the proposed FY 2010-11 budget
  • June 1: Public Hearing on proposed FY 2010-11 budget
  • June 15: Adoption of the budget
