GYC Carnival - Greensboro's Family Fair - Opens May 11 at the Coliseum
GREENSBORO, NC -- (May 4, 2010) -- Gates open at 4 pm Tuesday, May 11, for Greensboro Youth Council's Carnival at the Greensboro Coliseum parking lot, 1921 W. Lee St. The annual carnival, the largest youth-run event in North Carolina, this year runs through Sunday, May 16. As in the past, the GYC Carnival features rides, midway games, live entertainment, and great food. Highlighted activities include a Kiddie Land with rides for younger children, a SpongeBob SquarePants beach party Saturday, May 15, on the GYC Stage, a Fun Center with face-painting, removable tattoos and arts and crafts, and the Battle of the Bands contest from 1-7 pm Saturday, May 15. Local bands compete for a $500 cash prize.

The GYC Carnival is hosted each year by more than 200 local teens who volunteer more than 2,500 hours on the project. "I enjoy seeing the community excited about being at the Carnival and having a great time," says Cherri Miller, this year's Carnival chair and a senior at Dudley Academy. "It's a great feeling to know that this major event was planned entirely by Guilford high school students."
GYC, a City's Parks and Recreation Department program, is a volunteer organization for high school students that teaches leadership, parliamentary procedure, responsibility, and the importance of being involved in the community.
