City Turns to Long-time Employees to Fill Key Roles

GREENSBORO, NC (July 6, 2010) – Greensboro City Manager Rashad Young has appointed three long-time City of Greensboro employees, Dan Curry, Sue Schwartz and Barbara Harris, to key management-level positions. These appointments are effective immediately.

Curry, who previously served as acting director of the City’s Housing and Community Development (HCD) Department, has been appointed manager of the City’s community sustainability efforts. This is a new position, primarily funded through a federal grant, that was created to coordinate the City’s efforts to achieve higher levels of energy efficiency, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, conserve natural resources, and develop green jobs throughout the community. In his new role, Curry will also be responsible for implementing the $5 million Energy Efficiency as a Pathway to Community Health and Wealth (PATHWAY) project funded by the US Department of Energy’s Retrofit Ramp-up Grant. The project aims to improve the energy efficiency of existing buildings in east Greensboro, while creating job opportunities and healthier places to live and work.

He joined the City in 1973 as a planning technician for the Planning Department, before working his way up to deputy director and development manager of HCD. He holds a bachelor’s degree in environmental design and landscape architecture from North Carolina State University. His salary will remain the same at $96,712.

Schwartz, manager of HCD’s Neighborhood Planning Division, has been named interim director of HCD. She will be charged with overseeing HCD activities including supporting programs that encourage home ownership, neighborhood revitalization and economic development, historic preservation, and assistance to homeless residents.

She brings more than 25 years of experience in planning, housing and community development to her new role. She joined the City in 1987 as a community planner and worked her way up to chief, then manager of HCD’s Neighborhood Planning Division.

Schwartz holds a master’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh, and has been recognized nationally for her contributions to the Planning field. Her salary will remain the same at $75,700.

And finally, Harris, planner for HCD, has been appointed interim manager of HCD’s Development Division. She will be responsible for managing the City’s redevelopment and housing efforts, as well as the brownfields remediation program. Harris has extensive experience in nonprofit operations and has been overseeing the City’s brownfields program for a number of years. Her salary will remain the same at $55,170.
