Gatten First Woman Elected to Chair War Memorial Commission
GREENSBORO, NC -- (September 3, 2010) -- Former Greensboro City Council member Florence Gatten has been elected to chair the War Memorial Commission and will be the first woman to do so in the organization's 52-year history. A member of the commission since 2008 and most recently its vice-chair, Gatten will serve as chair through September 2011.
At its September 2 meeting, the commission also elected McArthur Davis as its new vice-chair. Davis, a commission member since 2006, is president/CEO of Greensboro-based Nonprofit Development Institute Inc.
The 10-member volunteer War Memorial Commission services as the Greensboro Coliseum Complex's advisory board. Members are appointed by City Council.
In 2009, Gatten was honored with the Adelaide F. Holderness/H. Michael Weaver Distinguished Service Award in recognition of her more than 30 years of public service, including three terms on the Greensboro City Council. In addition to her role on the War Memorial Commission, Gatten is also currently a member of the Moses Cone Health System Board, the UNCG-Well-Spring Health Centers Advisory Committee, and the Institute of Political Leadership. Gatten was also a founding director of the Greensboro Public Library Foundation.
