Sportsplex Director Inducted into YMCA Volleyball Hall of Fame

GREENSBORO, NC -- (July 14, 2010) -- Chuck McCracken, volleyball tournament director at the Greensboro Sportsplex, was recently inducted into the YMCA Volleyball Hall of Fame in Phoenix, Ariz., during the USA Volleyball Adult National Championships.

McCracken, a volleyball and tennis coach with more than 10 years experience, has led college teams through rebuilding, change, growth, revitalization and team building. His achievements include an NCAA National Volleyball Tournament appearance, an Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship, and selection as the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Coach of the Year while coaching the Guilford College women’s volleyball team.

McCracken spent a number of years working with YMCA programs around the country, including the Guilford College Community YMCA, where he served as director from 1986-1993. He also worked with the YMCA in Indiana and at the Greensboro Metro YMCA.

He was the founder of the Piedmont Triad Volleyball Club, where he was director from 1988-2008. The club then became part of the Greensboro Sportsplex, which now operates it under the name Sportsplex Volleyball Club. In his 20 years as club director, McCracken taught thousands of kids to love the sport of volleyball and many of his players are now returning to the area to coach in local volleyball clubs. During his tenure, 12 teams won the Carolina Region championships and represented the Carolina Region in the USA Volleyball national championships. His club also generated three All-American selections.

“Chuck is a true gem in our community and has been instrumental in the development of volleyball as a viable sport for our youth,” said Lane Newsome, Greensboro Sportsplex manager. "He has been my mentor as I transitioned into sports administration. I can’t think of a more deserving Hall of Fame inductee.”
