Harrison Turner Named Honorary Lifetime Member of War Memorial Commission
GREENSBORO, NC -- (January 21, 2010) -- At its January 19 meeting, the Greensboro City Council unanimously voted to recognize Dr. W. Harrison Turner as an honorary lifetime member of the War Memorial Commission. The appointment marks just the third time in the commission’s 50-year history, and the first time since 1976, that an honorary lifetime membership has been awarded. Turner joins Charles Hagan Jr. and William H. Sullivan Jr. as the only individuals to receive this honor.
The War Memorial Commission is a City Council appointed, 10-member volunteer organization that serves as the Greensboro Coliseum Complex’s advisory board. At its January meeting, the current War Commission members unanimously voted to recommend to Council that Turner be awarded an honorary lifetime membership in appreciation for his years of dedication and service to the Coliseum Complex.
Turner served as a member of the War Memorial Commission from 2002-08, holding the chairman position in 2008. His other notable volunteer participation at the Coliseum and Coliseum-hosted events include serving as president of the Tournament Host Committee for the ACC Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournaments (1997-2001 and 2003-2008), president of the Greensboro Sports Council (1991-1992) and serving as chairman of the Little Four Invitational Basketball Tournament in 1988.
Born in Martinsville, Va, Turner attended medical school at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond and later performed his residency at Duke Medical Center. Throughout his career, he has received a plethora of professional honors reflecting his years of practice in North Carolina as a well as host of civic honors for his life-long commitment to volunteerism.
