City’s Student Human Relations Commission to hold Conference Aims to heighten awareness and understanding of diversity
GREENSBORO, NC (February 23, 2010) – The City of Greensboro and Guilford County Board of Education’s Student Human Relations Commission will hold its 2nd annual conference Tuesday, March 2, from 9 am to 4:30 pm, to heighten awareness and understanding of diversity and human relations among students. The conference will be held at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 1301 Alamance Church Rd.
The conference will include facilitated breakout sessions on the role of student commissioners and how they can identify human relations issues in their schools, promote positive human relations among other students, and understand immigrants and their civil rights.
Also, students from Guilford College, University of North Carolina at Greensboro and NC Agricultural & Technical State University will perform skits related to common human relations issues and facilitate a discussion on how commissioners can address those issues at their schools.
The SHRC was formed at the beginning of the 2008-09 school year, when the Guilford County Board of Education partnered with the City of Greensboro’s Human Relations Department and the City of High Point’s Human Relations Department to establish a 15-member Student Human Relations Commission at local high schools to promote understanding and respect of diversity among students, school staff, parents and the community. High schools participating with the Greensboro Human Relations Department are: The Academy at Smith, Dudley, Eastern Guilford, Early College at Guilford, Grimsley, The Middle College at NC A&T, The Middle College at Bennett College for Women, Greensboro College Middle College, The Middle College at Guilford Technical Community College (GTCC)-Greensboro, The Middle College at GTCC-Jamestown, Guilford County School’s Newcomers School, Northeast Guilford, Northern, Northwest Guilford, Page, Ragsdale, Smith, Southeast, Weaver Academy, and Western Guilford.
High schools participating with the High Point Human Relations Department are: The Academy at Central, Andrews, Central, The Middle College GTCC-High Point, Southern Guilford and Southwest Guilford.
