McGirt-Horton Library Grand Opening Set for August 26

GREENSBORO, NC -- (August 23, 2010) -- The grand opening celebration for the new McGirt-Horton Branch Library is slated for 5 pm Thursday, August 26, at 2509 Phillips Ave. City officials, library staff, and community supporters will be on hand for the celebration, which is open to the public.

Grand opening festivities continue Friday, August 27, and throughout the weekend with health, fitness, and nutrition activities for adults; book-sharing and bubble fun for children; dental screenings and free toothbrushes for visitors of all ages; storytelling with Fred Motley; and music from Josephus’ Jazz Band, the Aycock Middle School Drumline, and local DJ Buster Brown.

In 1986, the McGirt-Horton Library opened as a one-room community reading station in Claremont Courts. The library outgrew that space and moved in 1989 to a leased facility in a shopping center on Phillips Avenue. In 2006, voters approved $3.5 million to construct a new 10,000 square foot library in the same shopping center at the corner of Phillips and Woodbriar avenues. The new library building was designed to become a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified library.
