Greensboro Mayor Releases Statement about Greensboro Police Department
GREENSBORO, NC (May 13, 2010) – In response to ongoing criticism of the Greensboro Police Department, Greensboro Mayor William H. Knight has released the following statement: “Recent disruptive actions and public statements have called into question the integrity and professionalism of the Greensboro Police Department. It is important that there be no misunderstanding about my or City Council’s position in these matters.
City Council and I fully support our police department, Chief Tim Bellamy, City Manager Rashad Young, and Assistant City Manager Michael Speedling in the handling of all matters related to police policy and administration. There is no corruption within the Greensboro Police Department. Good policing, adherence to professional standards and quality training are benchmarks to which the department strives to reach every day. There are numerous measures in place to monitor and evaluate police department performance and we fully support those initiatives. City Council and I are responsible for ensuring that City Manager Young is able to discharge the important business of the City without interruption, intimidation or threat. City Council will take any actions necessary to ensure timely and efficient delivery of City government protection and services to its residents.”
