Council Member Danny Thompson Nominates Greensboro as Best Community for Young People
GREENSBORO, NC (May 11, 2010) – Greensboro City Council member Danny Thompson announced at a press conference today, Tuesday, May 11, his nomination of Greensboro as one of the 100 Best Communities for Young People in America.
The 100 Best recognizes and celebrates extraordinary community-wide efforts to improve the well-being of youth and end the nation’s high school dropout crisis. The program is operated by America’s Promise Alliance, founded by General Colin Powell and his wife, Alma.
“You have heard it said that Greensboro is a great place to raise a family. The reason this is the case is because of the great programs, opportunities and partnerships that exists to assist young people in reaching their full potential,” said Thompson. “That is why I am pleased to nominate Greensboro as one of the 100 Best Communities for Young People.”
Greensboro offers a wide variety of programs and services aimed at enriching the lives of young people from programs offered by the City of Greensboro such as the Youth Leadership Program, to the community work by organizations such as the Guilford Education Alliance and Junior Achievement.
Over the next couple of weeks, City of Greensboro staff will work with youth organizations and the community to develop the application package, which is due June 1.
