Field Operations Awarded Public Sector Star by NC Department of Labor
Award recognizes local governments for their leadership and commitment to safety.

GREENSBORO, NC – (May 27, 2010) – North Carolina Department of Labor Commissioner Cherie Berry presented the Public Sector Star Award to the City of Greensboro’s Field Operations Department on Thursday, May 27, at the Hugh Medford Service Center, 401 Patton Ave. The Carolina Star is a program of the NC Department of Labor that recognizes workplaces with exemplary occupational safety and health programs.

The Field Operations Department oversees solid waste and recycling collection, street and stormwater maintenance, and landscape and mowing services. The department has worked to enhance safety for its 350 employees through an increased emphasis on training and compliance with city and state standards. Field Operations has reduced personal injuries by more than 45 percent and reduced vehicle / equipment accidents by 33 percent since becoming a department in 2006. These safety improvements translate into fewer lost work days, lower medical costs, reduced workers compensation costs, and reduced vehicle accident and repair costs – an
estimated cost savings of $750,000.

“The City is proud to be recognized by the NC Department of Labor as a Public Sector Star recipient,” said Greensboro City Manager Rashad Young. “This award represents the highest commitment to safety, and reflects our ongoing efforts to ensure that City employees have the resources and knowledge to handle their duties in the safest manner possible.”
