Greensboro Police Department ‘Runs and Waits’
in Support of the Special Olympics

GREENSBORO, NC (May 27, 2010) – This Friday, May 28, the Greensboro Police Department (GPD) will participate in the Special Olympics' torch run to raise awareness for the international organization that helps improve the lives of people living with intellectual disabilities through sports.

The run, which is a prelude to the state’s 2010 Special Olympics Summer Games taking place June 4-6 in Raleigh and Cary, kicks-off at 8:30 am in the parking lot of Boston Market, 5615 W. Friendly Ave. From there, the run will extend down Friendly Avenue into downtown Greensboro, ending in front of GPD’s headquarters at 300 W. Washington St. The public is invited to participate.

Also, on Friday, June 4, from 5-10 pm, GPD and Guilford Metro 9-1-1 (GM 9-1-1) will team up with local Longhorn Steakhouse restaurants for the annual Tip-a-Cop fund-raising event for the Special Olympics. The event will be held at both Greensboro locations of Longhorn Steakhouse, 2925 Battleground Ave. and 6012 Landmark Center Blvd.

During the event, members of GPD and GM 9-1-1 will help Longhorn’s wait staff serve customers. Customers are asked to make a donation, above their tip, to the Special Olympics.

In addition to serving customers, GPD and GM 9-1-1 will be selling Special Olympics t-shirts and hats. All proceeds will benefit the Special Olympics of North Carolina, with a majority of the funds going toward Guilford County’s Special Olympics.
