Preview of FY 2011-12 Budget Offered to City Council
GREENSBORO, NC (April 19, 2011) – During a work session prior to tonight’s City Council meeting, City Manager Rashad M. Young provided Council with an update on the City’s progress in creating the proposed FY 2011-12 budget. Facing a $9 million budget gap, the City is preparing to meet City Council’s recommendation of a total $18 million reduction to the general fund as compensation for a potential reduction in funding from the state government.
The City is following its management, accountability and performance (www.greensboro-nc.gov/MAP) plan in crafting the budget and is using result areas to identify and develop the proposed reductions. The draft that was presented to Council includes a three-tiered recommendation that reaches $15.1 million in reductions and has an increasing level of impact on workforce and service capabilities.
The Tier 1 proposal includes $9 million in budget reductions, the Tier 2 proposal includes $13 million in reductions, and the Tier 3 proposal includes $15.1 million in reductions. The tiered proposals have the potential to impact 61 full-time positions (41 of which are currently filled) and reduce part-time, seasonal, and roster positions in various service areas.
While today’s presentation to City Council is intended as a preview only, the City Manager’s formal presentation of budget recommendations and reductions of $18 million will be delivered on May 17. The budget process will continue to progress with a public hearing on the proposed budget set for the June 7 Council meeting. Council is scheduled to adopt a budget during its June 21 meeting.
