Exhibit on Jewish Life in North Carolina Opens at Historical Museum April 3

GREENSBORO, NC – (March 29, 2011) – A new exhibit documenting four centuries of Jewish life in North Carolina will open at the Greensboro Historical Museum on Sunday, April 3, at 2 pm at 130 Summit Ave.

The exhibit, “Down Home: Jewish Life in North Carolina,” is part of a statewide tour and chronicles how Jewish traditions have become part of North Carolina life and Southern culture. Admission is free and the exhibit will run through Sept. 18.

The exhibit includes artifacts and recreated settings of Jewish life, personal stories of Jewish immigrants to North Carolina, and Jewish contributions to the state. “The use of personal storytelling makes it an ideal complement to the museum’s Voices of a City permanent exhibit,”
said Historical Museum Director Fred Goss.

“To enhance the exhibit, the Historical Museum is planning a series of community programs and educational opportunities, as well as a supplemental display highlighting the rich history of our local Jewish community,” Goss said. Details of those programs will be announced closer to the exhibit opening date.

Other parts of the project include a documentary film, a companion book published by UNC Press, and fourth- and eighth-grade curriculum guides with DVDs for all North Carolina public schools. The exhibit is sponsored and developed by the Jewish Heritage Foundation of North Carolina.
