Google Choose Kansas City as Broadband Internet Site

GREENSBORO, NC (March 30, 2011) – City of Greensboro officials learned today that Google announced Kansas City, Kansas, as the first location for its ultra-fast broadband internet network. The City of Greensboro was nominated as a testing site candidate for the network in 2010.

Greensboro’s nomination bid was a strong effort with a great deal of community interest. The bid was supported by nearly 8,000 visits to the Google Greensboro website, over 5,000 visits to the Google Greensboro “nominate us” page, and 6,500 friend requests on various Facebook pages that supported Google coming to the city.

Google’s decision follows a year-long search for a city in the US to serve as a test site for the company’s new, high-speed fiber-optic network. Beginning in 2012, the Internet access in Kansas City will be provided at speeds of one gigabit per second, or 100 times faster than typical Internet speeds.

According to Google, the company will continue looking at ways to bring ultra high-speed Internet to other cities across the country.
