About the City of Greensboro
Millenium Gate at Melvin Municipal Office BuildingThe City of Greensboro is approximately 132 square miles in area and has more than 260,083 residents, making it one of the 100 largest cities in the country and the third largest in North Carolina.

Greensboro operates under a Council / Manager form of government, in which the City Council sets policies and enacts ordinances, which are then carried out by the City Manager. The City Council is made up of a Mayor and eight Council members, all of whom are elected by Greensboro residents. Each Council member, including the Mayor, has one vote.

The City Manager is appointed by the City Council and serves as chief executive officer for the organization. Aided by a Deputy City Manager, three Assistant City Managers and an Assistant to the City Manager, the City Manager implements all policies, programs, and ordinances adopted by the Council. In addition, the Manager evaluates overall community concerns and works toward solutions to problems.

The City's administrative offices are located in the Melvin Municipal Office Building at 300 West Washington Street. Offices are open Monday through Friday from 8 am to 5 pm. City offices are closed on the following holidays: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, day after Thanksgiving, Christmas day and the date before or after Christmas, depending on the calendar year. 

City Council Meetings

City Council meetings are held on the first and third Tuesday of each month, beginning with speakers from the floor at 5:30 pm. All meetings are held in the Council Chamber of the Melvin Municipal Office Building. Free parking is available in the lot located at Eugene and Washington streets after 5:30 pm and in the Greene Street parking deck.

Meetings are broadcast live on Cable Channel 13 and on the City's website. All Council meetings are open to the public. During the meeting, residents are given an opportunity to address the Council on any topic. For more information, call the City Clerk at 373-2397.

City Council work sessions are held on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 2:30 pm in the Plaza Level Conference Room of the Melvin Municipal Office Building. During these meetings, Council members receive updates on a variety of topics. Briefings are open to the public and the first 30 minutes of each session are for speakers from the floor.
