Fire
The Greensboro Fire Department (GFD) provides emergency response to fire, hazardous material spills, medical emergencies, and rescue situations for Greensboro residents. Fire protection begins on the first day of annexation. In case of an emergency, call 911.
The GFD offers many fire safety services free to Greensboro residents, including Safe-At-Home visits from firefighters who will help ensure that your house meets fire safety standards; installation of free smoke detectors with batteries; fire and life safety instruction for residents with special needs; and instructions on operating a fire extinguisher.
The GFD also offers fire safety programs to schools, daycares, and retirement facilities.
The GFD has been rated by the Insurance Services Office and the North Carolina Office of State Fire Marshal as a Class 1 department, the highest rating possible. In 1997, the GFD was one of the first fire departments in the world to be accredited and have a Class 1 insurance rating.
